Tinker & Petey's Big Adventure
July 27
Destination: Devil's Tower, WY
The Plan: Visit Devil's Tower then head east towards home!
What we did: Devil's Tower and headed east! And much much more!

We woke up to find that the hotel room we were staying in WAS NOT a bad dream. It really was as bad as we thought. Spent some time online watching my investments tumble and updating the website.

Next, a cursory examination of the dogs showed that they had acquired the musty smell of the carpet and room. And back into the tub! And out came squeaky clean dogs again!

We hit the road and went north in search of Devil's Tower. It would be about a 5 hour drive so we settled into our now normal routine of Bob driving and Tinker and Petey sleeping. Oh what I'd give for Tinker to drive and I nap for awhile!

We drove past a herd of something wild. My guess is they were antelope. My second less likely guess is elk. If anyone can tell from the picture below, let me know! When I pulled over to take a picture, the herd scattered. Unfortunately I didn't get the picture with the dozen or so critters close to the road.

We made it to Gillette and pulled into a gas station right behind a truck with a Green Bay Packers sticker on the window. And since all of us Packer fans are such friendly fellows, we chatted for a while and found out that we both lived in Neenah and Green Bay. He said there is a large Packer following in Wyoming. We're everywhere!

We made it to Devil's Tower without any difficulty. It is an Indian holy place and it is very neat. I've wanted to go there since I saw the place in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". It is also part of the movie "Powwow Highway". If you ever get the chance to see that one, do. It is one of my favorite movies. We entered the park and climbed up the trail to take pictures. Got some good pics with Tinker and Petey...and as we came back down the trail...another visitor mentioned something about no dogs allowed. Oops...we did HONESTLY miss the sign...Doin' more crimes with the doggies!

Back on the road...we decided we had time to make Mt. Rushmore before it got dark. And yes...we did make it before dark. So another round of pictures and Tinker and Petey getting friendly with all of the other visitors again. We had a nice visit to Mt. Rushmore.

At this point, the tourist part of the trip was over, or so we thought. We saddled up the Beast for the long trip home. Along I90, there was mile after mile of roadside with signs for Wall Drugs...the infamous Wall Drugs...the one on the bumper stickers. So we drove fast to try and get there before dark. We did..but barely...and grabbed a quick tourist picture before taking off. It is an interesting tourist spot...a bunch of exhibits, gift shops, etc. Worth a stop on a family trip.

Now the urge to put on some miles and get home quick was stronger than ever. And that is what we did, we made it to Brandon, SD before the driver required a nap. It was a long day.

Herd of antelope in a field. They were grazing in the field near the road. When I stopped for a picture, they ran further into the field. One last tourist stop at Wall Drugs. It was getting late so the picture is a bit dark.
Pilgrimage to Devil's Tower
(doing crimes...dogs not allowed on trails...Oops...we didn't see the sign)
