Tinker & Petey's Big Adventure
July 25
Destination: Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico
The Plan: 4 legs, 4 states...
What we did: 4 legs, 4 states...Pictures soon!

Well...we made it to Four Corners National Monument...but it was dark and the park was closed. So I'll just have to tell you what happened in between.

Slept in today...I think that the trip is taking a toll on the mighty Road Warriors. We stayed at a Best Western in Las Vegas so I could update the last couple of days. Got up...did the updates. The Savage Beast needed a bath from the dusty day yesterday...so we washed the Beast in 110 degree heat. It was HOT HOT HOT (good Buster Poindexter tune too!) in Vegas. We made sure we had alot of liquids and the air conditioning cranked...and then hit the road.

Did a drive-by siteseeing tour of the Hoover Dam. Thought about stopping...be we wanted to make Four Corners...so we did the quick tour! Took a few interesting pictures of the road cut through the mountains above Hoover Dam. The Beast is really digging the paved roads today. I've promised that we'll stay on paved roads from now on.

A few miles west and north of Flagstaff, AZ...I saw a large vertical "cloud" formation. Took a few pictures...and it turned out to be a very recently started forest fire. We saw alot of emergency vehicles and activity to fight the fire. The fire was confirmed by a news report on the radio.

Headed north and east of Flagstaff into the Hopi Indian Reservation. The drive was interesting because of the land formations throughout the Reservation. I took a couple of pictures...but the view in person is much more spectacular. It is getting dark earlier and earlier, plus we are now in Mountain time...so we arrived at Four Corners way too late.

Around dusk, hundreds of bats came out and were flying around feeding on insects. It was neat watching them dart around changing directions so fast and almost hitting the truck as we went down the highway. Glad they were enjoying dinner.

We thought about going to Cortez, CO to either camp or stay at a hotel...but another larger forest fire is raging in Mesa Verde National Park and it is a 40 mi. drive to backtrack for pictures at Four Corners...so we crashed in the truck for the night.

Drive-by Site-seeing tour of Hoover Dam Mountain road above Hoover Dam, interesting how road was cut out of undulating formations
Start of forest fire 2 miles north of Belmont, 8 miles west of Flagstaff Another picture of the forest fire
Neat view of a gorge on the Hopi Indian Reservation, AZ Another view of the gorge...pictures don't do it justice
