| Tinker & Petey's Big Adventure |
| July 24 |
| Destination: | Boddie, CA, a trip through Lucky Boy Pass, then to Rachel, NV |
| The Plan: | Check out a ghost town, ...a gravel road mountain pass and maybe some Area 51 stuff. |
| What we did: | Don't know yet, but if the website isn't updated by July 26,
we're either stuck in Lucky Boy Pass, NV or have been abducted by aliens. Got up early so we could hit the road and try to fit all of our plans in. We hung around for a while so Marie and Mitchell could play with Tinker and Petey before school. Thanks Tim and Robin, for being such great hosts. We had a blast...and I wish we had more time to have a chance to wear out our welcome! Next trip...you guys are first on the visit list. We hit the road...in search of adventure. Our first stop was going to be a ghost town: Boddie, CA. Went through the mountains taking Hwy 108 (North of Yosemite) and the views were awesome again. A couple of pictures below were taken crossing Sonora Pass. Made it to Bridgeport, CA and I was really tired so we pulled off the road and I took a quick nap. Woke up refreshed and stopped at a grocery store for a quick lunch. At this point, we decided that if we visited Boddie, we might not make Rachel, NV with enough daylight to get pictures. Our adventure took us north to find Lucky Boy Pass. Found the road to Hawthorne...and found out that we had almost 38 miles of "minimally maintained" roads to cover. The gravel road was quite rough and we made our way at about 20 MPH. This leg of the trip was going to prove whether or not the Savage Beast was built "Ford Tough". We made our way through the hills and came across a beautiful river valley snuggled in the hills. Scared up a skunk...thank goodness the little guy didn't give us a spray. That would have added a level of hassle to this trip we really didn't want. The plush valley was due to a large stream flowing through the valley. Continuing through the hills, we got brave. I thought...hey! The Savage Beast is a 4WD machine... lets do some off road trails! Tinker and Petey were game, so we found a trail that looked interesting and up we went. It was fun exploring. Grabbed a couple of pictures and returned to the road to continue our journey. The roads and trails back there are sooooo dusty. Finally made it to a paved road a couple of miles from Hawthorne and now have a great appreciation for the road system we have here in the U.S. If we had more time, it would have been fun to take a couple of side trips from the unpaved road. We still could have travelled to Boddie...or another dead-end town Aurora. The truck made it...and we'll see on the way back if the rough road shook anything loose on the truck. Off we raced in search of the Extraterrestrial Highway! Area 51, the A'le'inn. Made it to the infamous A'le'inn for pictures, souvenirs and a famous Alien Burger. Had just enough light to get pictures. Had we gone to Boddie, we wouldn't have made it. Sorry Tim and Robin, next time I'll make it there. A review of the map showed that we could make Las Vegas and off we went. Stopped at Best Western hotel for the night. It was very hot and I think that Tinker and Petey appreciated the air conditioning in the hotel. |
