| Tinker & Petey's Big Adventure |
| July 16 |
| Destination: | Felton, CA |
| The Plan: | Drive up to Felton, CA to hook up with my friend, Tom Utic |
| What we did: | Woke up bright and early...Not hard when sleeping in the truck.
It actually wasn't too bad...with the passenger seat reclining...a couple of blankets and a couple
of dogs to snuggle with. We still would've stayed in a hotel if we could have found a vacancy. We figured out where we were on the map. It isn't as scenic and fun when travelling at night. So the vote was 3-0 to head back to San Luis Obispo to catch the coastal highway, CA Hwy 1, to make our way to Felton. We spent a few hours meandering our way up the coast. The highway is not conducive to making time during travels...so if you are in a hurry...plan a different route. The coastal highway is a winding path through the mountains...often travelling at speeds of about 20 MPH. The view is awesome tho' (at least for this impressionable kid from the midwest). Tinker and Petey had fun being yanked this way and that way from the sharp turns that never seemed to end. Scattered along the road are turnoffs where you can stop to take pictures. We didn't take many pictures today...but some representative views along the coast are shown below. Also scattered along the road are small villages and resorts. They looked interesting for a get-away weekend. We didn't stop much along the trip. We wanted to get to Tom's at a reasonable hour. We made our way to Monterey, CA and grabbed some road food. Thought it was cute to feed french fries to a bunch of scavenging birds. Then one of the birdies jumped up on the truck...Oh, how cute. After we started to drive away...we noticed how much the cute little birdie enjoyed the fries...Big bird turd...right on the hood. Thanks...NOT. Made it to Santa Cruz...then headed north on CA Hwy 9. Another winding road into the redwood forest. A few miles up the road, Fenton is a small non-town right smack dab in the middle of the redwood forests. As I was talking to Tom on the cell phone...I came right up to his street. So we didn't have to search for his house. We hung out for a while...until it was time for some more Dog Heaven! We took a walk on some trails into the redwoods. The dogs absolutely loved it. We went tripping through the woods, dirt and mud, through puddles and even found a spot to go swimming. All without leashes (shhhhhhh...Don't tell the park rangers we were on the horses only trail!!) I was so impressed by how Tinker and Petey took the adventure in stride...It was alot of work for those little legs to climb up and down the hilly trails. And they stayed pretty close by too! Next we had to race home. Tom has the lead role in a Sherlock Holmes play written by a local playwright (one of the students Tom had as a high school teacher). The show was at a local theatre and was written in true Holmesian fashion. The story was interesting and Tom and his fellow thespians did a good job. Back to Tom's house...and crash we did...hard. I was too tired to update this page that night! |
