| Tinker & Petey's Big Adventure |
| July 12 |
| Destination: | Escondido |
| The Plan: | Hang out at brother Dave's house and maybe take a drive into the mountains |
| What we did: | Got a late start...Hung out in the morning
at T's house. Talking stocks and the market. Got on the road back to brother Dave's house around noonish. Got back to Dave's house without a map. I'm starting to get the hang of driving around Escondido, finally. The roads are not laid out like Minneapolis...so every trip is an adventure. Got started downloading the previous days pictures...then Dave and family got back from dropping his in-laws off at the airport. Dave ran into the bedroom...all excited...saying we gotta go...We only had an hour to get to the Mt. Palomar Telescope. So we packed up the dogs and went in search of adventure... ...screaming through and up the mountains. Mt. Palomar closes at 4:00. We did arrive with about 5 minutes left. The telescope is really cool....however 5 minutes is about all you need inside the building. But still...it is interesting. The view was spectacular...shoulda got a picture of the view. After the telescope...we headed off to Doane's Pond...in search of the giant Mt. Palomar bullfrogs. David and his sons had camped up on Mt. Palomar a few weeks ago...and had found a pond with HUGE bullfrogs. You can hear them...and you know they are HUGE just by their croaking. We sent the dogs off to search for bullfrogs. Walking around the pond...you could hear them crashing through the grass. We came to a shallow area where there were hundreds of large tadpoles. When we came near, the water appeared to boil from all of the scrambling tadpoles. At the back end of the pond, Dave finally found one of the elusive giants peeking at us through the grass. I was able to snap a quick picture before he crashed away from us. It was a cool pond, and brought back many childhood memories for both Dave and I. Next we were off to a picnic area to just hang out in the quiet woods. We noticed a number of woodpeckers hanging around the site. We had some peanuts, so we tossed some out onto the ground. The birds got brave and I was able to get a pic. Then it was back to Dave's house for a late dinner and three hours of updating the web site. |
