Tinker & Petey's Big Adventure
July 7
Destination: Grand Canyon Village, AZ
The Plan: Hope this will be an exciting day. Drive up from Flagstaff, AZ and check on aerial tours of the Grand Canyon. The dogs will hopefully go on their first plane ride today. We'll at least do a "Chevy Chase" at the canyon. Don't need cash, so we won't rob the cash register. Find a campground somewhere around the Grand Canyon for our evening digs.
What we did: We got up early...seems like I go to bed at local time (late) and then get up on Central time (early). That, plus all of the driving is probably why all 3 of us are tired! Tried a Days Inn and a Hampton Inn...wouldn't take dogs. Ended up at a La Quintas Inn in Flagstaff. If I had enough time, I'm sure I would have found a lot of hotels that would take the dogs. I have NEVER EVER EVER seen so many hotels along a strip of highway in my life! Every imaginable hotel chain and mom & pop style hotels were along Business I40/Route 66 through Flagstaff. Flagstaff seems to be a rockin' town, and it would be fun to come back and sample the night life. Maybe it is just a jumping off point for all of the attractions around northern AZ.

Sorry doggies and Bob, no aerial tours allow dogs on board. So we had to settle for a drive by tour. On the way to the Grand Canyon, we found another KOA to stay at. This one was NOT 50 yards from an interstate hwy...so we anticipated a better nights sleep! Reserved the tent site for the evening...and off we were to the big hole in the ground. It was less than an hour drive from the campground.

Past the entrance to the park, there is a sign where everybody was taking pictures. Hey, they're tourists, we're tourists...might as well fit in...so we took pictures at the main park sign. Tinker and Petey were generating a lot of interest from the other visitors. They were good dogs for pictures and even some other groups had pictures taken with them. At this point, I didn't think to take pictures of the other groups as well. So into the park we went!

Grand Canyon National Park is so huge, with so much to do, you need to spend a week there. We had about 3-4 hours. We checked out the various points on the South Rim, that you can travel to by car. The canyon is so IMPRESSIVE! Every view is an awe inspiring sight. To anyone who has not seen this park...you must see it. You can get right to the edge of the canyon. I am not afraid of heights, but when I stand that close to the edge, I get weak in the knees, thinking what it would be like to fall over the edge. Extrapolational Empathy is a interesting emotion (if there is such a thing!)

There are many points to view the canyon from. At the last point, Desert View, we met a nice group from Staples, MN. You'll see their picture below. They didn't appreciate the fact that Tinker, Petey and I were GB Packer fans...and threatened to toss the dogs over the edge! I THINK they were just kidding....Hah...I know they were...Just teasin' you guys from Staples! They were all very nice.

Tinker and Petey drew alot of attention. They really are very cute dogs and coupled with how social they are, they made an impression on alot of people. Many, many pictures were taken of the two fuzzballs!

After the Grand Canyon, we were off to see the Meteor Crater. It was about an hour and a half drive. Let me tell you...It ain't the Grand Canyon, but it is one heck of a hole in the ground...570 feet deep! It is an interesting place...with an interesting story.

Back to the KOA...to set up camp and made a late dinner of grilled sandwiches, using TONKA TOASTERS! Dave C. ...I promised I would get a picture up on the site...to show you what a T.T. is...but that will have to wait a few days! It was a beautiful night out...and we slept quite well.
