| Destination: | Carlsbad Caverns, NM |
| The Plan: | Looks like we're off to see some more caves. Hopefully, like Fantastic Caverns, they will allow dogs on the tour. Then we'll find a campground someplace in Northern NM to set us up for the Painted Desert, Grand Canyon and Meteor Crater portion of the adventure. |
| What we did: | Hit the road late. Took some time to update the website. Went next
door to the Putt-Putt Golf and Ice Cream Shoppe for a nostalgic ice cream cone. Back in the mid-80s
when I worked for CDC and stayed at the Green Oaks Hotel...the miniature golf place was the only
activity we could do at 3:00 A.M. when we got off the late shift at Carswell AFB. It was nice
to see that it hasn't changed since those days. It was much needed relief back in those days,
when we were either working or sleeping. Drove, and drove and drove. Decided to stay at Brantley State Park and camp out. Brantley Lakes are the result of a dammed (sp?) up river...that created a large recreational lakes area and wild life refuge. It is north of Carlsbad by about 15 min. It was pretty neat...would be a nice place to stay for a while. The whirlwind tour didn't allow us to really enjoy the park. Maybe in Northern CA, CO or WY we'll have a chance to camp at one place longer and relax. The warm desert winds were terrific. I can understand how those fires in NM got way out of hand. The winds continued through the night and actually made for pleasant sleeping. The dogs haven't figured out camping yet, but sleep like rocks. Until some little noise...then they LEAP INTO ACTION. Of course, that wakes up me... I think that the heat was getting to Petey a bit...he barfed twice. Ick. |
